At this Womensphere Summit, meet the visionaries and changemakers reshaping the future of New York. Join discussions and collaboration sessions on how to enable and promote gender equality across academic institutions, workplaces, and society. Exchange ideas, discuss solutions, and explore answers to some of the most challenging issues facing New York and the world today.

Given the complex issues facing New York and the world, how does the next generation of women leaders and innovators create the future? How can the next generation of women in New York help achieve the Global Goals for Sustainable Development, and help drive the Fourth Industrial Revolution? What are the emerging opportunities where the next generation of women can lead, drive innovation, participate in entrepreneurship/intrapreneurship, and create transformational impact in New York and the world?

New York is full of opportunity and resources. Yet it faces many difficult challenges.

Income inequality and racial injustice continues:

  • More than 3 million New York State residents, including almost a million children, live in poverty.
  • Black and Hispanic New Yorkers are twice as likely to be poor as white residents.
  • More than 3 million New York residents rely on emergency food programs, a 30% increase since 2007. Hit hardest are veterans, seniors, and working families.
  • Homelessness in New York City is the highest since the Great Depression, and it is also racially biased: 58% of homeless shelter residents are Black, 31% are Hispanic, and just 7% are white.
  • Rising rent prices are pushing low income households out of the city, as almost two-thirds of available units are unaffordable.
  • New York City is a major hub for human trafficking:
  • Hate crimes in NYC increased 30% in 2016, mostly against Muslim or LGBTQ victims.

Environmental issues and climate change create damage and suffering

At the same time, the Fourth Industrial Revolution brings both new opportunities and new crises:

Despite progress, women continue to face additional challenges:

These challenges, both old and new, will not be overcome easily. It is only by sustained and creative effort from passionate Emerging Leaders that a better future will be created for New York.
